CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

  • Intro to Bachata:  (Friday Night, Om Culture Dance, 7:30pm)
Bachata is a fun Latin dance style with a simple basic rhythm and step. And you can borrow many of these variations to use in your Blues and Fusion dancing!

  • Night Club 2-Step Inspirations:  (Saturday Morning Workshops, 10am-noon)
Have you tried a Lindy Swingout or West Coast Swing Sugar Push in Night Club? Or maybe a Salsa Shadow Turn?  Here we’ll find inspiration from other dance styles to increase our Night Club repertoire!

  • Cross-Step Waltz Blend:  (Saturday Afternoon Workshops, 2-4pm)
Cross-Step Waltz Goes Country: Country Two-Step is full of interesting turning patterns that blend right into any traveling slower waltz. We’ll mix and match several new variations to give the leads new ideas and keep the followers on their toes!

  • Ballroomin' Blues: (Sunday Morning Workshops, 10am-noon)
Ballroomin' is an elegant and dynamic style danced to slow jazz music and characterized by traveling, momentum, and fancy moves. Born in large ballrooms like the Savoy in New York City, the big bands would mix in slow tunes and everyone kept dancing. This is one of Campbell's favorite styles because it fits many sultry jazz tunes and strikes a balance between cozy and dramatic. You'll find this style at most Blues dances around the country, as well as when dancing to live swing and jazz bands!

    • Hour 1: Essentials - Learn the mechanics and tricks of traveling with style in open (or even close) embrace.  We’ll meander our way around the room with walks and pivots, all while making sure our connection is powerful and comfortable.

    • Hour 2: Flair - Sprinkle in some fanciness when the time is right.  We'll explore a few skips, dips, or turns to spice up your dance.

  • Blues -- Rhythmic Layering and Syncopations (Sunday Afternoon Workshops, 2-4pm)

    • Hour 1: Solo Movements and Rhythms:  Survey a variety of traditional blues movements and rhythms. Explore how to add layers to create your own style!

    • Hour 2: Partnered Rhythms at Play:   Learn tools to be playful with both your partner and the music so that you’ll never get into a “rhythmic rut” again.

A little more about Campbell from her website bio:

Campbell first fell in love with social dance at Stanford, where she performed in several vintage dance groups, partnered Richard Powers' classes, and earned the Louis Sudler Prize in the Arts, the Dance Division's highest arts award. Today she feels lucky to have found her dream job -- teaching social dance on the faculty at the University of Texas in Austin and traveling the world to share her passion for dance.

At home, Campbell is working to energize the Austin dance community with new ideas and bring together dancers with different backgrounds. In her travels, she focuses on Blues dancing and Fusion -- how to combine elements from styles like Blues, Tango, Waltz, and Swing to be able to dance to a wide variety of music. Her classes strike a unique balance between technique and play, giving students just enough detail to challenge themselves but also plenty of confidence to be creative on the dance floor.

Her talent, warmth, and pure joy for teaching and dancing create a memorable learning experience that has students coming back for more!
