Seattle Dance Workshops, Nov-Dec

with Ari & Whitney

 WHEN:  Tuesday, Nov 1st, 7-9pm

WHAT:  SPECIAL WORKSHOP: "Advanced NC2S Framework -- For All Levels of Dancers"

Take your NC2S dance to a whole new level with this workshop that focuses entirely on lead/follow connection through rotation and energy transfer.  This kind of connection awareness will not only transform your NC2S dancing, but can easily be applied to many other forms of dance (waltz in particular because of the rotational component).  This workshop is equally pertinent to both leads & follows!

WHERE:   China Harbor, 2040 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA.  Plenty of free parking available.  Doors open at 6:45pm.  Come early to sign in, register, stretch, warm up, etc

COST:   $25   (credit card or PayPal online; cash or check at the door only)

 WHEN:  Thursday, Nov 17th, 7-9pm

WHAT:  SPECIAL WORKSHOP: "Lifts, Dips, & Liabilities -- Lifts Without Lifting & Dips without Dropping" — all lovely and appropriate moves for the social dance floor from an MD's perspective:

All too often Whitney and I have seen dancers injured on the floor by throwing themselves or their partners into inappropriate dips or drops. In fact, we were both recently injured this way, which is what inspired this class. While it's true that in this workshop you will learn a number of ways to add elegance and garnish to your dancing with lovely dips, elevations, flourishes, and balance steps, the focus will really be on how to safely execute and transition into these kinds moves while best protecting yourself and your partner.
No partner required.  Great for all levels of dancers.  No experience necessary.

**PLEASE NOTE:  No one will be lifted off the ground in this workshop!

WHERE:   China Harbor, 2040 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA. (Upstairs ballroom, above the restaurant) Plenty of free parking available.  Doors open at 6:45pm.  Come early to park, sign in, register, stretch, warm up, etc

COST:    $25  (credit card or PayPal online; cash or check at the door only)

----    ----    ----    CLASS DESCRIPTIONS    ----    ----    ----

TUESDAY SERIES:

The theme for Tuesday is "Navigating the Crowded Dance Floor"   CLASS LEVELBeg/Int (no previous dance experience needed),

7:00-8:10:  "Big Blues Moments for Small Back Spaces" - great ways to shine, style, and play on a crowded dance floor.  In this class we'll delve into fun, playful solo steps and couples movements that help shape the blues asthetic, always being mindfull of how to match the energy between two partners, and how to be considerate of the space around you. A major emphasis of the class will be on solo & partner energy and connection which are the cornerstones of playful improvisation.

8:15-9:30:  "Bal-Swing 101: Balboa Basics for Blues & Swing Dancers":  Traditionally, bal-swing is thought of as a tight, close-connected, very smooth, very energy-efficient style of dancing done to the rip-roaring rag-time high-energy jazz music of the 20's and 30's. However, as a dance, the steps are very applicable to the modern music of today, and provide the perfect  transition if the floor is too crowded or if you want to take a 30-second breather from larger, high-energy swing or lindy movements.  In this class we'll review the basic balboa connection and step patterns, then add bal-swing variations like the "break step" and "syncopation shuffle", and introduce classics such as the "Lolly", the "come-around", and the "spike-out".  A perfect introduction to both this beautiful, playful, up-beat, classic dance style, and to it's application to the modern dance floor today.

WEDNESDAY SERIES:

The theme for Wednesday is "Spicing it up for the Summer!"      CLASS LEVEL:  Int/Adv  (some basic dance experience required)

7:00-8:10: "Tango'd up in Blues" -- taking your blues on a little sojourn south of the equator!  In this class we'll explore how latin rhythm is frequently inherant in blues music, and how movement appropriate to that rhythm can be applied to your dance.  Embellish what you know of blues already by learning to cut the floor with sultry tango footwork and spicy latin breaks that are easily inserted into your blues styling.  A great way to broaden your dance horizons for the summer!

8:15-9:30:  "West Coast Swing for Hot Summer Nights" -- Building on WCS basics (sugar push  & whip turn), we'll explore great new ways to stretch, glide and play using 6 & 8 count swing movements, garnished with some sweet & smokey blues styling.  A major emphasis of the class will be on energy and connection which are the cornerstones of playful improvisation.

Let's relive those glorious High School days by coming dressed as what you would not have wanted to see either worn by your date, or by your chaperoning parents at your HS prom.  What is the ugliest attire, the worst matching ensemble, or the most outrageous get-up you can find?  Don't be shy... Tonight's a night to celebrate the worst.  Wear something to challenge the senses.  Prom pictures will be taken to memorialize the event for posterity  :)

Each of the Tuesday classes listed above can be taken as a single two-hour workshop, or in combination with any of the other classes listed.  The Thursday's Night Club 2-Step intensives can also be taken as individual classes, or as a three week series.  All classes in June will focus mainly on new steps, patterns, footwork, combinations, and styling.

All classes are followed by a guided practica and social hour providing you with even more opportunity for personalized attention from the instructors as well as a chance to mingle and schmooze with the other dancers.  What a wonderful way to socialize while expanding your dance reportoire for the summer ahead!!

GENERAL INFO:  Tuesday's "2-Hour tune Up" classes are in our unique "group-private" salon format, which means:

    • Each class is limited to 6 leads and 6 follows for maximun personalized attention and one-on-one coaching
        • Everybody is welcome.  No partner necessary.
        • Please note class levels in the descriptions above.
    • Each class session includes:
        • 2 hours of instruction
        • 40 minutes hours of guided practice
        • Lot's of new moves guaranteed!

    ===== FALL (Sept-Oct-Nov) =====

    Greetings all,

It's been a delightful but seemingly brief summer, but we trust you all had a wonderful few months with some quality outdoor time. Now with the Fall just around the corner, we're gearing up for our new Roll Up the Rug classes beginning in mid September.

This notice is just a heads up for what we're planning.  The actual schedule and registration will be posted on www.rolluptherug.com soon (make sure you're on our email list and we'll let you know when registration opens).  We are really excited about our classes, which include an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of creating a new dance style for waltz which we will invent, showcase, and video for YouTube!  See details below:

UPCOMING CLASSES (we'll be teaching three nights of the week)

    1.  Inventing the "Waltz Rueda":
This will be a wonderful class for intermediate & advanced level dancers, where participants will work collaboratively to help invent, name, and create a video library of moves and transitions for a dance style we're calling "Waltz Rueda".  Borrowing from the "salsa rueda" and "round dance" forms, waltz rueda will use cross-step waltz as a foundation for movements where partners can be exchanged or passed back and forth within the dance.  So far nothing like this exists in a formalized way for cross-step waltz, so we'll literally be the first to create and name the movements for this dance!

    2.  Night Club 2-Step: intermediate, advanced combinations
Continuing from some of the foundations we laid in the beginning-level workshops I taught with Lilli Ann this summer, and in the intermediate workshops I taught with Whitney in the Spring, we'll continue to explore intermediate-level patterns of movement in this beautiful flowing dance style.

    3. Group-Salon Specialty Classes 1 & 2 -- "Focus on Connection"

We'll take one night and offer two classes that focus on lead/follow connection in Blues and in Swing.  Connection is what creates the conversation in dance and allows for spontaneity and improvisation.  This is also Ari's forte as a teacher and dancer.  These are the kinds of classes that will improve your dance skill a dozen fold!

    4. Group-Salon Specialty Classes 3 & 4 -- "Having Fun with Footwork"

We'll take a second night and offer two classes that highlight fun, juicy moves and combinations in two other styles of dance (TBA)

    ONE-DAY DANCE WORKSHOPS:

We're also planning some fun one-day group workshops and dance practices sprinkled over the next several months in subjects such as "Fusion Waltz", "Fusion Swing", "Club-Dancing" (hustle, west coast swing, night club, etc), "Balboa", "One-Step" and "Blues Fusion" (details TBA)

    UPCOMING CLASSES

     A.  Two  TUESDAY classes focusing on "The Creative Process":

On Tuesday nights we'll take advantage of the large dance space at China Harbor to explore the process of creativity in dance.
      • Nightclub 2-Step, fun intermediate combinations" (Tues, 7-8pm)
        • Night club two step is a beautiful smooth-style flowing dance that combines elements of the "quick-quick-slow" latin or salsa step with the upright, lilting, traveling style of a foxtrot or ballroom dance, and is danced to some of the most beautiful, slower, straight-tempo'd pop-songs or  ballads that you'll hear coming from the last three decades.

In each class we'll introduce a basic element of the dance, then dive deeper into variations that can be strung into a delightful combination that you can continue to build upon.  For those who took Ari's intro classes with Lilli Ann, or intermediate workshops with Whitney this summer, this is perfect for you!

**Ari is one of this country's leading experts in Night Club 2-Step, having learned the dance in California directly from it's innovator, Buddy Schwimmer over 25 years ago.  In the early 1990's, he introduced the first Night Club 2-Step classes to Seattle while teaching with Living Traditions, and has been performing, creating, and teaching it locally, nationally and internationally ever since.  Click here to see an example of this beautiful, flowing, smooth-style dance.
    • Inventing the "Waltz Rueda" (Tues, 8-9pm):
This will be a wonderful class for intermediate & advanced level dancers, where participants will work collaboratively to help invent, name, and create a video library of moves and transitions for a dance style we're calling "Waltz Rueda".  Borrowing from the "salsa rueda" and "round dance" forms, waltz rueda will use cross-step waltz as a foundation for movements where partners can be exchanged or passed back and forth within the dance.  So far nothing like this exists in a formalized way for cross-step waltz, so we'll literally be the first to create and name the movements for this dance!

    B.  Two WEDNESDAY classes focusing on "Connection"

We'll take one night and offer two classes that focus on lead/follow connection in Blues and in Swing.  Connection is what creates the conversation in dance and allows for spontaneity and improvisation.  This is also Ari's forte as a teacher and as a dancer.  These are the kinds of classes that will improve your dance skills dramatically!

    • "Blues Foundations and Role-Reversal" (Wed, 7-8pm):    An essential class for not only mastering the art of lead/follow connection, but for understanding how both partners need to lead and listen (follow) at the same time while dancing -- the hallmark of great dancers!   In addition to connection, we'll learn compression, extension, and stretch techniques that apply not only to blues, but to all dance forms.  This is the perfect class to learn how to create conversations in your dance and how to share the lead back and forth with your partner.
    • "Swing for Small Spaces" (Wed, 8:15-9:15):   Put the cool in your swing by making less matter more.  "Cool" is not making it look like you're working hard -- it's making it look effortless!  And if you've ever seen Ari dance, this is what he does!  In this class you'll learn the techniques for connecting to your partner in swing that you won't get from a simple 'steps' class.  You'll learn foundations that will allow you to dance effortlessly with any partner, whether you're a beginning, intermediate, or advanced dancer.  Make nuance matter!  Celebrate the cool....   ;)

    C.  Two THURSDAY classes all about "Fun with Footwork"

On Thursday we offer two classes that highlight fun, juicy moves and combinations in a variety of innovative dance styles perfect for the club scene:

    •  "Rhumba Nuevo"(Thur, 7-8pm):  In the spirit of  "Tango Nuevo" which opens up, relaxes, and introduces free-style movement to the more traditional tango form, in Rhumba Nuevo, we make the same transition from traditional to "nuevo", both in music and in steps and styling.   First learn the essentials of rhumba dancing, then learn to integrate elements from foxtrot, traveling blues, tango and even kizomba into the steps to create a new blend of rhumba that's out of this world!  If you know rhumba, this will be a delight for you to play with.  If you don't know rhumba, this will be a perfect introduction to this dance!
    • Club Dancing 101:  The "Hustle" & "Disco 1-Step"(Thur, 8:15-9:15):     We'll explore these two fun, lively, up-tempo dance styles that can be done to almost any modern club or up-tempo WCS music.
      • The "Hustle" is a rotational slot dance form that was popularized in the 70's, made famous by the song of the same name, and memorialized in the dance movies of that era.  It is a style that Ari has been dancing and teaching for over 20 years, and which is seeing a resurgence today.
      • The Disco 1-Step is a fun, versatile, single-step based club dance that is experiencing a revival in the USA.  It's one of the most popular forms of club dancing in the South Pacific, goes hand-in-hand with the hustle, and is a lot of fun to learn! It's also incredibly versatile and creative as it can be applied to travel dancing or to spot dancing. Great for students of all levels!

While it's true that in this workshop you will learn a number of ways to add elegance and garnish to your dancing with lovely dips, elevations, flourishes, and balance steps, the focus will really be on how to safely execute and transition into these kinds moves while best protecting yourself and your partner.

    Sunday, June 10th, 2012:

    "West Coast Swing & Night-Club 2 Step"

    • WHEN: Doors open at 1:45pm. Workshop runs from 2:00 - 6:00 pm.
      • 2:00 - 4:00 pm:

        "West Coast Swing (beg/int)"

        (

        Pre-req: none)

      • 4:00 - 6:00 pm

        : "Night Club 2-Step (int/adv)"

        (

        Pre-req: basic NC2S)

"WCS: From Solid Foundations to Fun & Flash": West Coast Swing is one of the smoothest & sexiest forms of social dance on the scene today, one which has evolved tremendously over the past 30 years both in regard to the music it's danced to and the character of movement in the dance. In the first half of this workshop, we'll introduce several basic WCS patterns (and some fun variations), paying special attention to framework and connection - the sweet stuff that make you go "ahhh" on the dance floor. In the second hour, we'll add more playful movement and styling to the mix. Perfect for beg/int level dancers. For maximum learning, this class should be taken in conjunction with Ari's blues foundations workshop being offered on Saturday at the Paradise Ballroom (See above) Not required, but HIGHLY recommended!

"Nightclub 2-Step: fun combinations for intermediate dancers": Night club two step is a beautiful smooth-style flowing dance that combines elements of the "quick-quick-slow" latin or salsa step with the upright, lilting, traveling style of a foxtrot or ballroom dance, and is danced to some of the most beautiful, slower, straight-tempo'd pop-songs or ballads that you'll hear coming from the last three decades. In this class we'll introduce a basic element of the dance, then dive deeper into variations that can be strung into a delightful combination that you can continue to build upon.

Ari is one of this country's leading experts in Night Club 2-Step, having learned the dance in California directly from it's innovator, Buddy Schwimmer over 25 years ago. In the early 1990's, he introduced the first Night Club 2-Step classes to Seattle while teaching with Living Traditions, and has been performing, creating, and teaching it locally, nationally and internationally ever since. Click here to see an example of Ari demonstrating this beautiful, flowing, smooth-style dance.

    • 7:00-8:00:  "Tango'd Up in Blues!" - Blues and Argentine Tango share many widely overlapping features and are often seen danced on the floor together in many late night blues parties or social dances.  Each emphasizes and builds upon connection to your partner; Each has a potential for wonderful, playful, sophisticated footwork that can crossover to either dance; Each  utilizes a backdrop of beautifully expressive slow & sultry music as a canvas for the dancers to innovate.  While tango is a difficult dance to master, however, blues provides the perfect entry level to learning the foundations of both dances as it is much more relaxed & forgiving to do, and it's much easier to blend with other dances you may already know.  This class is the perfect introduction to Tango-Blues fusion, with a focus on tango movements (ochos, ganchos, boleos, etc) that can easily be applied to blues music and styling!
    • 8:15-9:15:  "Traveling Blues" (movin' & groovin' on the floor) - Learn how to rotate, move, and stretch across the dance floor with higher energy traveling steps and combinations as you would see in "ballrooming" or "fusion tango" blues!  Great to take in conjunction with the 7pm "Tango'd Up in Blues" class.  CLICK HERE to see an example of the kind of fun and play you can have with travelin' blues.

    An Introduction to slow

    "East Coast Bal-Swing Fusion"

In this workshop, we'll dive into some of those delightful bal-swing elements, but in this case, ones which can be done to a much slower East Coast Swing (ECS) tempo.

In addition, we'll explore the world of "Bal-Swing Fusion" -- how to seamlessly transition between ECS and Bal-Swing movements (One of Ari's specialties & original swing-fusion innovations!).

     Whitney Evans: BIO

Whitney was first inspired as a child to dance by watching old classic musicals, and her whole adult life she dreamt of learning to social dance.  Finally in 2004, she was introduced to Salsa, and while she became hooked on the music and moves, she was mostly drawn to the wonderful community that dancing offered.

In 2007 Whitney met Ari who introduced her to a whole new world of partner dancing.  She has been training with Ari ever since and together they have been traveling nationally and internationally spreading Ari’s methods of connection in Blues, Balboa, Latin, Swing, NC2S, WCS, Cross Step Waltz, Fusion Waltz, and more. Whitney is a connected follow and complements Ari’s style of teaching with whit, charm and enthusiasm.

*Fun Fact*  While Whitney loves to dance, her true passion is in the field of building construction, which is how she makes her living.

      •
      • 8:30-9:30:  "Intro to Night Club 2-Step" - In this class we build on the six basic foundations steps of this beautiful & elegant dance, then learn to incorporate them into graceful and flowing combinations that are such a hallmark of this style.  Ari first introduced NC2S to Seattle's Living Traditions community over 25 years ago and has been innovating and teaching it throughout the States and internationally ever since.  CLICK HERE to see an example of NC2S  (All levels welcome - No Partner Needed)

      • 9:30-9:55: Guided Practice for class participants

      • NOV 14th, 2013:  "Advanced Concepts in Partnering & Connection"   The hallmark of advanced dancers is that they are aware of and utilize energy, direction, momentum, rotation, and tension in their partnership more than just memorizing footwork or patterns.  Understanding these concepts opens up an exciting world of possibility for improvisation and "conversational" movement in your dance.  In this workshop you'll gain a whole new level of appreciation for the art of dancing at the level of a whisper, then learning to power up from there.  In this workshop we'll focus primarily on compression and extension in creating rotational movement.  Informative, engaging, insightful, fun! (All welcome - No partner needed but always encouraged!)

      • NOV 21st, 2013:  "4-Dimensional Connection"   Take your dancing to the next level with the 4-D experience:  "See it, Hear it, Feel it, Express it".  Another in our series of advanced partnering and connections workshops, in this class we'll play with how to add individual expression and musicality to your partnering.  Expressions are elements that you can either do independently from your partner or together (if you know how to lead it!).  Musicality is awareness of how your movements & energy reflect the energy, rhythm, and arc of the music you're listening to. The secret is in learning how to garnish your dance with this kind of pizazz, but not take anything away from your partnership. This class takes you to that next level. (All Levels welcome - No partner needed)

      • 6:30-7:30:  Intro to Blues & Fusion Dance" -  Fusion dance has been described as "imagination in motion" or "the dance that gamified dancing"-- utilizing the kind of true energy-based conversational lead and follow technique that is a hallmark of Ari's curriculum.  These days, fusion styling can be found intertwined in other dance forms such as blues or contact improve (and now more and more in WCS), and is characterized by an ability to interpret and dance to contemporary music that would normally be outside the social dance genre.  While much of the Seattle blues scene has evolved into fusion, this is the only class that teaches these techniques and concepts in a progressive series.  Ari is one of this country's leading blues & fusion teachers, and will be teaching this January at the Denver Fusion Exchange (This country's preeminent fusion event!).    All levels welcome - No Partner Needed.
      • 7:30-8:30:  "Swinging the Blues - Fun New Combo's from the Ground Up!" - This class is the perfect introduction to "jump" or "swinging" blues.  After laying down a great foundation for this higher energy blues/swing dance style, we'll quickly move on to learning how to improvise with alternate rhythms, and to incorporate your own creative exprssion into the mix.   Ideal for both beginning dancers or for experienced dancers who want to improve their partnering and connection skills.  Highly recommended to be taken in conjunction with the 6:30pm "Fusion" class.  Great music, and a TON of fun!  (All levels welcome - No Partner Needed)

ARI LEVITT:  "Partnering, Connection, Conversation, & Musicality"  In Ari's classes, we will be using blues, swing, fusion, and a few other dance styles to focus on many of the much broader and deeper concepts of partner connection, fun, and play that can be applied to just about any dance genre you do.  If you've ever taken a workshop before with Ari in one of these topics, you know that you are nigh guaranteed a rich, transformative experience, with a plethora of wonderful concepts and ideas to take home with you that will give you much to think about for both your dancing on the floor, and, in the case of our "wellness" theme for this retreat, the applications of those lessons to life off the floor...

RICHARD POWERS:  "Collaborative Dance Partnering with Tango and Blues"  This series of classes will quickly take partnered dancing from the basics (including if you have never danced), to new possibilities that Richard's Stanford students are currently finding very exciting (including his most advanced students).  No dance experience is required, just a fun-loving attitude and lots of enthusiasm, but the more partnered dancing that you happen to know, the more you'll get out of the class.

SHARON SEBO:  "More Adventures in Tango, & Role Reversal"  In her classes, Sharon will explore those unique aspects of Tango steps and connection that allow for fun, playful , conversational dancing on any dance floor. You will also enjoy opportunities for role-reversal with your partner -- one of the best ways to learn both your own lead/follow role, as well as to appreciate the perspective of your partner.

      Other Teachers and topics TBA.....
